Sunway College — Monash University Foundation Year

THE CHEAPER CAMPUS CAN COST YOU A DEGREE, and this is the single most useful thing to know before choosing one. Johor Bahru is roughly RM11,600 a year less than Kuala Lumpur for the same qualification — but Advanced Mathematics, Global Studies and Contemporary Issues are taught only at Kuala Lumpur. Monash requires higher-level Year 12 mathematics for Engineering, Computer Science, Actuarial Analytics and Digital Business, so a student who takes the cheaper campus to save money may close the very degrees that made the year worth paying for. Decide the degree first, then the campus. Against the rest of the Malaysian field this is the expensive end: MAHSA RM9,650, City University RM13,840, IIUM RM17,500, INTI RM21,931, APU RM28,400. Kuala Lumpur is four times MAHSA. What the money buys is portability — MUFY is recognised by universities in Australia, New Zealand and the UK and by branch campuses and private universities in Malaysia, so the year is not spent on one university's permission. The grading is worth understanding because it is unusually forgiving: your entry score is the average of your eight units out of 100, and units are semesterised, so a weak unit can be retaken in a single semester without repeating the year. Passing a ninth or tenth unit first time earns bonus points. For an international student, a retake semester is subject to visa approval.

Other charges

RM2,250 administrative fee for international students, plus 6% SST on all fees. You must supply your own laptop running Windows or macOS in English with a front camera, microphone and speaker; the mathematics subjects also require a Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus CE Python graphing calculator.

Entry

A pass at SPM, O-Level or equivalent with at least five credits — and the eleven-year Uzbek and Tajik attestat is accepted as that equivalent (owner, 2026-09-05). Minimum age 16. Australian and New Zealand citizens and Australian permanent residents are not eligible. To finish you must pass eight units: English Units 1 and 2, which are compulsory, both units of at least two other subjects, and then either a third complete subject or any two further Unit 1 subjects.

English

IELTS 5.5 overall with no band below 5.0, or a credit in SPM English or O-Level English as a Second Language, or a D in O-Level English as a First Language or English Literature. This is a full band below the 6.5 the Monash degree itself asks for — the foundation year is where you close that gap, and passing MUFY English at 65% meets Monash's degree bar without sitting IELTS again.

Intakes

January, July and August. The January intake runs January–May then July–November; July runs July–November then January–May; August runs August–December then January–May. Note this is a DIFFERENT calendar from the Monash degree itself, which takes February, July and October.

Scholarships

Sunway runs its own awards for MUFY students, but the one its guide names — the Jeffrey Cheah Entrance Scholarship — rewards results in SPM, Cambridge O-Level or the Ontario Secondary School Certificate, none of which an Uzbek or Tajik student holds. Treat Sunway scholarships as unlikely here until someone confirms otherwise. What the MUFY year is really worth financially is what it unlocks at Monash: the Monash High Achiever Award is RM5,000 off tuition per semester, awarded automatically at admission, and it asks for a MUFY average of 89%.
